Xero was born in New Zealand, grew up in Australia, and it still builds for this corner of the world first. The last year has been one of its busiest — an AI assistant that answers real financial questions, a new top-tier plan launched in Australia, and a steady stream of automation aimed squarely at small business bookkeeping. Here’s what’s new, and why it matters if you run a small business in Australia or New Zealand.
JAX: an AI assistant that actually knows your numbers
The headline is JAX — “Just Ask Xero” — Xero’s AI financial assistant. At Xerocon Brisbane (September 2025), Xero announced a major expansion of what JAX can do (announcement):
- Ask for your numbers in plain English — instant access to cashflow, P&L and balance sheet data, with trends visualised in charts and tables, rolling out in Australia first
- Predicting when invoices will actually be paid — JAX learns payment behaviour so your cashflow forecast reflects reality, not due dates (TechRepublic’s coverage)
- Automated expense processing and document handling — less receipt-shuffling
- Real-time bank reconciliation matching — transactions matched to bank feeds as they arrive
Xero Ultra: a bigger plan for growing Australian businesses
In July 2026 Xero launched Xero Ultra in Australia — its most advanced plan to date, with JAX built in as a financial “superagent” that automates routine finance workflows and surfaces personalised insights (Xero’s announcement). It’s aimed at businesses that have outgrown starter plans but don’t want to graduate to heavyweight ERP software — a very common shape for successful Australian small businesses.
Better tooling for your accountant and bookkeeper too
Xerocon Brisbane also brought a new Xero Partner Hub (beta from November 2025, rolling out to all partners in early 2026, starting in Australia and New Zealand), a time-saving workpapers solution, and deeper analytics powered by Syft (media release). If your accountant lives in Xero — and in AU/NZ, they almost certainly do — their tools are getting sharper at the same pace yours are.
Why this suits AU and NZ small businesses so well
None of this changes what already made Xero the default here: bank feeds from the banks you actually use, GST and BAS handling that fits how the ATO and IRD think, payroll built for local rules, and an enormous local accountant network. The new wave of AI features stacks on top of that foundation — which is exactly why it’s compelling for a five-person business, not just a fifty-person one.
One catch: AI is only as good as the books underneath it
Ask JAX about your P&L and it answers from the data in your Xero file. If your Ontraport sales arrive weeks late, as lump sums, or not at all, the smartest assistant in the world is summarising fiction. Current, line-itemised, correctly-coded data is what makes all of the above worth having — we’ve covered this in getting accurate sales reports in Xero.
That’s where XOSync fits: it syncs every Ontraport sale, payment and refund into Xero automatically — line items, taxes, gateways, currencies and contacts all mapped correctly — so the platform Xero keeps improving is working from your real numbers.
Feed Xero clean data. Start a 30-day XOSync trial for $1 and your Ontraport sales start flowing into Xero automatically — US$29/month after, cancel anytime.
